Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships:
This position is located in the Political Unit of the United Nations Office for West Africa, based in Dakar, Senegal. The intern will report directly to the Mediation Support Advisor. This is a non-paid position and all travel, lodging, related fees will be the responsibility of the intern.
Responsibilities
In support of the Mediation Advisor at the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa the intern will be responsible for, but not limited to, the performance of the following duties:
- Provide secretariat support to Mediation Support Advisor UNOWA in areas related to the realization of UNOWA’s mandate.
- Prepare notes and papers on regions and related events within assigned area to provide concise, professional outputs.
- Compile information on general mediation and conflict resolution issues;
- Contribute to organizational preparations of negotiation, dialogue and mediation efforts at the local level;
- Perform other related duties as required.

Professionalism: Shows ability to consolidate information and report on complex problems and policy issues; has experience in West Africa; is pro-active in identifying and solving problems.
Communications: Effective communicator in English and French. Is able to draft documents. Shows ability to speak and write clearly and concisely.
Planning & Organizing: identifies priority activities and assignments as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
Accountability: Takes ownership of all responsibilities and honors commitments; operates in compliance with organizational regulations and rules;
Building trust: Reputation for dealing honestly and openly
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Social Science, International Economics, Law, Public Administration and/or related fields. A relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:Experience in political analysis; strategic planning; and knowledge of West Africa. Experience working in a challenging environment—individually and as part of a team.
Languages:Fluency in spoken and written French; in addition to English. Ability to draft notes in French and English.
